1969

Done with the church Dad turned to Rick
who withdrew bank money saved
from days he rode bicycle

to stock store shelves
at A&P,
on the other side of Rockford.

The summer he left for college
without anything to take
because Dad talked him out of it

so we could make the down payment
on a three story red brick house
that sat next to a dead-end street.

Had what Dad called potential.
He and Mom stripped inside trim
to show oak under yellow paint,

testimony to the bargain
the summer savings helped secure,
an investment in the future

that Rick was happy to escape,
and I was jealous he made it
because I saw what was in store.
