Greeting Dear Reader,

The Maynard was inspired by a community of undergraduates English majors and their teacher, Jami Macarty while studying the New York School of poets--Ashbery, Guest, Koch, O'Hara, and Schuyler--at Simon Fraser University in the fall of 2006. At the conclusion of the course, questions about how to maintain their wild, wonderful, transformative community circulated. Through the inquiry, Jami Macarty provided some kicks in the ass and impetus of dangling carrots to the group. Eventually Nick Hauck actualized the idea, choosing the name, format, and editorial aesthetic of the magazine. Now after his long and creative run, Nick has run away to Paris. The incomparable Moss Whelan, another students in the community of undergrads, has picked up the mantle. Moss has his own editorial focal points and aesthetic interests, which are situated in the experimental, which avoids linear narrative, confessional, and singular voice.

You, dear reader, are invited to submit your finest word experiments for...

Thank you for your interest in The Maynard,
