All Bones Hunger a Home

Birds are difficult liars,
unstapled from northern trees,
their struggle is a public one.

Pinched movements in flight,
cold swamps their vitals
through the last shreds of
summer’s exhausted light.

It’s a song I’ve heard many times,
the sun is leaving and the
separation draws us close.

Again, honking departure,
practice not looking back.
